Box Office: Hunger Games Tops With $123 Million
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 dominated the box office this weekend — and the whole year — with a record $123 million in ticket sales.
The film – which stars Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth and adds Julianne Moore to the cast, hit a franchise low, however. Catching Fire opened to $158 million on the same weekend last year, and The Hunger Games opened with $152.5 in March of 2012. But the franchise is still setting records, becoming the only one in history to have three consecutive films debut at the top of the box office.
Big Hero 6 came in at number two with $20.1 million brought in and Interstellar, in its third week, took in $15 million. Rounding out the top five were Dumb and Dumber To, which brought in $13.8 million and Gone Girl, which has made a total of $156 million domestically.
Beyond the Lights continued to draw audience, coming in at number 6 with $2.6 million in ticket sales. The film, starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Nate Parker, has earned $10.1 million over two weeks in release.
Next week, Horrible Bosses 2 — which adds Jamie Foxx to the cast of the original — and Penguins of Madagascar will duke it out for the Thanksgiving box office crown.
