LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul calling on athletes to stand together and spark change in the aftermath of a rash of murders commited by police is promising.

But Kenny Smith is trying to take it a step further. The former NBA player turned NBA analyst for TNT is calling on Black NBA players to put their money where their mouths are when it comes to police brutality. How? By giving 10 percent of their salaries to their own communities.

“I challenge each guy to allocate 10 percent of their salary to the communities that they’ve come from. Ten percent. Think of the agent. Ten percent and this dude just makes a phone call. He makes a phone call,” Smith said in what he called his State of the Union address on Facebook earlier this week. “That $90 million per team per year per salary cap goes to 74 percent of the African-American men in our league.”

“So now you can make a social-economic impact,” he added. “Which creates empowerment and creates education and opportunities that allow you to skip past all of the things that go on for a big group. I think that’s the responsibility."
