Fans Are Rallying For A Missy Elliott Statue To Replace This Confederate Monument
With ongoing deliberation on racism and white supremacy, spurred by Virginia’s Charlottesville riots and the removal of a Confederate monument, it was only a matter of time before we saw the rest of America begin eyeing more Confederate memorabilia in the nation.
But we didn’t need to look very far now that a Virginia fan of the femcee hip-hop legend Missy Elliott has drawn up a petition to have her statue standing in place of a Confederate monument. Right on the Grammy Award-winning recording artist and producer’s home soil of Portsmouth, the petition calls for their real hometown hero to stand as the face the city.
We believe it is time to finally replace the Confederate monument in Olde Towne Portsmouth Virginia near the intersection of Court and High streets with a new statue of a true Portsmouth native hero,” Nathan Coflin, the Virginia native who created the petition wrote on Change.org. “Who better to encapsulate the culture and spirit of the city enshrined in a new monument than Grammy Award-winning rapper, dancer, and record producer Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott?”
But, is it worth it? Well, the “Work It” emcee’s fans certainly believe so.
The petition landed on Twitter, where several fans urged signatures to reach the goal of 25,000
Then, Missy landed on the petition and acknowledged such an honor from fans as 'humbling'
Now, fans want everyone to put their name down on the petition to help flip and reverse Portsmouth's white supremacy glorification for good
