LeToya Luckett Reveals The Harsh Truth About Why She Was Kicked Out Of Destiny's Child

“There was nothing at the time that I could do about it. Did it hurt? Absolutely. Because we were friends."

Former Destiny’s Child member LeToya Luckett has become more and more candid in 2018 about her days as one-fourth of the R&B-landmarking girl group.

Speaking first with pastor and book author John Gray, Luckett dished on the financial inequity she was subjected to after being booted from the group. The “Torn” singer explained the emotions of confusion and fear she felt toward the idea of a solo career after her time in Destiny’s Child, the only industry place with her childhood friends she’d ever known. As crushing as that seems, there is still no bad blood between her and the girls two decades later though, which she shared with Toya Wright on T.I. & Tiny: Friends and Family Hustle. She understands that the decision didn’t come down from the girls themselves, but rather their management at the time, Luckett elaborated. And while the sting of the breakup was hard for her, Luckett refused to let go of the virtue that brought the ladies of Destiny’s Child together from the very beginning: sisterhood.

  • According to ‘Madame Noire’, Luckett explained that her back was practically against the wall once the decision was made

“There was nothing at the time that I could do about it,” she said. “Did it hurt? Absolutely. Because we were friends. I went to school with these girls.” The mommy-to-be added that Beyoncé and another former DC member, LaTavia Roberson, were in the group the longest. “Then LaTavia went to school. Met Kelly [Rowland]. And then Beyoncé showed up at my school one day as the new beautiful girl with this new beautiful voice. It was just so cool to experience something like that at such a young age. But that decision was made…we were sisters.”

  • Despite communication falling off between Bey and Luckett over the past 20 years…

She still praises that sisterhood, most recently when she dropped in on Bey backstage at the On The Run 2 concert right on their Texas home turf. LaToya remembers the moment warmly, recollecting Bey’s “mommy-mode” affection and the loving embrace she felt in the room upon the reunion. “That was such an awesome moment,” she said. “There was so much joy in that room. She went into straight mommy mode as far like ‘Oh my god. What’s she doing? Is she doing this, is she doing that?’ And I was showing them my sonogram pictures and everything. She was just so excited. We’re both very, very happy, and you could feel the love in the room. There wasn’t a lot of people in the room. It felt like it was just us, chatting it up.”
