HBO Unveils Trailer for ‘Love to Love You, Donna Summer’ Documentary
The trailer for HBO’s upcoming documentary about the “Queen of Disco” is here.
The film, titled Love to Love You, Donna Summer, will feature home footage, archived photographs, and never-seen-before clips capturing the life and work of Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Donna Summer.
The movie is described as an “in-depth look at the iconic artist as her voice and artistry take her from the avant-garde music scene in Germany to the glitter and bright lights of dance clubs in New York,” according to a release. It added, “a deeply personal portrait of Summer on and off the stage.” In the trailer, the late singer states, “I have a secret life. You’re looking at me, but what you see is not what I am.”
The project is co-directed between Academy Award-winner and Emmy winner Roger Ross Williams and Summer’s daughter, Brooklyn Sudano.
Born LaDonna Adrian Gaines, the “I Feel Love” singer shot to fame during the 70s amidst the famous disco era and soon earned the title of the Queen of Disco, establishing a stellar career that included 14 top-ten singles and four number-one records. In 1984 she became the first Black woman to receive an MTV Video Music Awards nomination for “Best Female Video” and “Best Choreography” for the title track of her album, She Works Hard for the Money.
Despite disco’s decline in popularity, Summer maintained influence in the entertainment industry. The singer, a non-smoker, died on May 17, 2012, following her battle with lung cancer.
Love to Love You, Donna Summer will be available to stream on Saturday, May 20, 2023, on HBO and HBO Max.
