“College Hill: Celebrity Edition” season three is approaching. The first two episodes will premiere on Thursday, June 20, on BET+, and then new weekly releases will follow. Can this next cast top last season? Possibly because, once again, it’s another motley crew of zany celebrities coming together to see if they have what it takes to earn a certificate in multidisciplinary studies. This time, they will matriculate at Xavier University, a private HBCU based in New Orleans.
This season features Tamar Braxton, Saucy Santana, Nick “Swaggy P” Young, Angela “Blac Chyna” White, Karlous Miller of 85 South, and Claudia Jordan. But do they know what they’re getting into? Here are five facts about Xavier University.
1. Xavier University is a Catholic institution founded in 1925 by Saint Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament.
2. Xavier is a small but mighty university. Its student body is roughly {just over 3,000] students, but it’s still a nationally recognized leader in STEM and health science careers. It produces more Black students who graduate from medical school than any other university in the US.
3. Xavier University's commitment to social justice was exemplified in May 1961 during the Civil Rights Movement. A group of Freedom Riders, who had flown to New Orleans after bus drivers in Alabama refused to take them to Montgomery, were not accommodated by locals out of fear of violence. However, Norman C. Francis, Xavier's Dean of Men, discreetly arranged for the group to stay in dorms on campus for several days, demonstrating the university's unwavering commitment to equality and justice.
4. Xavier University demonstrated remarkable resilience when Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. Despite several buildings being damaged or partially submerged, the university president organized boats and buses to transport students, faculty, and staff to safer ground. Students began returning to the school in early 2006, a testament to the university's strength and determination.
5. Xavier University holds a unique status as the nation’s only Historically Black Catholic university, a testament to its rich history and significant contributions to higher education.
