Man On Fire: Kel Mitchell Talks Faith, Family, and Food Fails
For many, Kel Mitchell is the face of a generation. He and Kenan Thompson were 90s icons with their show Kenan & Kel and All That before it. Their cult classic movie, Good Burger, is memorable and quotable by most millennials. But, Mitchell is so much more than a former Nickelodeon star. He is a man with a mission.
A two-time Emmy-nominated actor, Mitchell is a youth pastor whose faith is his guiding light. He recently released a book, Blessed Mode: 90 Days to Level Up Your Faith which also comes with a workbook that helps the reader build their faith and happiness. He also released a single by the same name.
Mitchell is also starring as a host of the MTV show, Deliciousness, and stars in a new holiday movie called, All I Didn’t Want For Christmas with Loretta Devine and Gabourey Sidibe.
But, these days many people are still talking about his recent appearance on Saturday Night Live where he starred in a sketch based on Kenan & Kel with Keke Palmer. The hilarious sketch went viral and reignited fan nostalgia. BET caught up with Kel to chat about passion, purpose, and evolution.
BET.com: I think you are just one of the funniest character actors and physical actors in my generation.
Kel: Oh, thank you.
BET.com: So I know you have a lot going on—the new Christmas movie. I am a big fan of this time of year just cuddling up with some cocoa. And watching Christmas movies, especially when you know there's representation from people of color. Why was it important for you to do this film?
Kel: Oh, I was very important. I love Christmas movies as well. So when I got the call, I was like, ‘I definitely want to do it.’ And it's a cool elf that I'm playing in the movie… it’s not your average Christmas movie, which makes it really, really fun. And that's why I really wanted to do it.
BET.com: Awesome. I love that. You are just coming off of a super high point with last week’s Saturday Night Live and the amazing Keenan & Kelly sketch. I know I’ve personally watched it like five or six times. What's the feedback on that? And how was that experience for you?
Kel: Oh, man, yeah, it's been awesome. I mean, with [What I Didn’t Want For Christmas] premiering and I feel so good. And then also getting the call to go up and do SNL. Kenan called me and said ‘Keke has this amazing idea’. And I was like, ‘Oh, I love it.’
So, I flew out to New York and SNL did an amazing job. I mean, the set looks exactly like it did at Rigby’s…they did a great job. I mean, all the way down to the floor. Like, the floor looked exactly like the floor in Rugby’s. It was great. And Keke is such an amazing actress, super, super funny. Hilarious. The whole entire night and each sketch and I always love working with my brother, we always have so much fun. So yeah, people were still talking about it.
BET.com: Yes, absolutely. Like I said, I watched it over and over again and Keke just killed it and you killed it. And Kenan, of course being his, you know, traditional straight man self. It was awesome. Thank you.
So you've been such an icon for a generation. And you know, you've grown up, you’re a husband, you’re a dad, and you’re kind of moving into a new direction in your career. Do you find that… there are some times your fans don't want to see you outside of the light that they've known you in? And how do you push back against that?
Kel: You know, my fans actually, they've really kind of embraced my different, you know, my different career paths and journey. Because I feel like they've grown up with me. And I feel like my fans are adulting through life. You know what I mean, they all grew up. So yeah, they have that nostalgia, but then they also recognize we've all been through different things in our lives. And now there are different things and different stories that they can relate to within my career. I feel like they come along with me on that journey. So, I am very thankful for that. Kenan and I both.
BET.com: That's awesome. Your new Christmas movie, What I Didn’t Want For Christmas, also stars Loretta Devine, who I’ve met, and I think she is just one of the most precious people on the planet. It also stars Gabourey Sidibe—what was it like working with that cast?
Kel: Oh, man. That's my Auntie now. It was so funny because I kept calling her ‘Legend.’ She was like, ‘Oh Kel, that makes me feel old.’ But I'm like, ‘no, no, you're a legend. And I can't believe I'm working with you.’ And I mean, it was cool. I mean, as an actor, that was just definitely one of my goals to work with the marvelous Loretta Devine. So that was awesome to do. Gabby is just super, super hilarious. She’s family now too. We improvised a lot with our scenes and her comedic skills are great. I think a lot of people are going to see that in this movie. Now, she's gonna get a lot more comedic roles. We know she can do drama. But as far as comedy, she's really really good at it. And, yeah, we had a blast every day.
BET.com: I love that. One of the things I admire most about you is your faith and how you are a proudly faithful person. And, how you invest in projects like books and your songs and other things that really demonstrate your faith. Can you speak to how that's been important to you in life and in your career pathway?
Kel: Oh, it's so important. You know, when people see me, I want them to see the God in me. He's what gives me the endurance to get up every day and do what I do. He gives me you know, the insight and the knowledge to be a great husband, a great father. And because I spend time in prayer with him, before I do anything, and so I let God guide me for what I need within my career, within my family, and within my life, I go to him first.
And that's another reason why I wrote the book Blessed Mode: 90 Days to Level Up Your Faith, because I wanted people to take care of their physical selves, their mental health, and their spiritual health because the spirit is very important. We're all spirits. And so it's important that we take care of that, by connecting with the one who designed us and knowing that we are beautifully and wonderfully made by God and everything is possible. You just have to have that faith and really rely on God and know that you can do anything that you put your mind to and your faith too. And so that's important to me. So yeah, God is everything
BET.com: That’s beautiful. I appreciate that. What are some of your future projects? What are you working on right now?
Kel: I also have a show called Deliciousness on MTV, which is in its third season. And so we just did our Christmas episodes all this week, so they're still airing. It’s a spinoff of Ridiculousness—and we just laugh at the food fails. It’s super, super fun.
And I also have pray.com—It's like the calm app, except it's all about prayer. And so you can go to bed at night, listening to my voice, to me doing a sermon. It's just like, so good to really just connect with God before you go to bed as well, you know because we go through so much throughout the day. So, to just kind of let go of everything and relax. I'm all about that. Just finding joy and gratitude. And so when pray.com approached me about partnering with them, that was something that I really wanted to do so yeah, definitely go download that.
BET.com: That's awesome. So last one. I know that people ask you about this all the time, but can we expect to see you and Kenan again, is there another collaboration in the works?
Kel: We just did the table read for Good Burger 2. That’s in the works. I can't tell you too much about the movie, but just know that it's coming. It’s moving forward and so we're super excited about that. The fans are gonna love it.
New episodes of Deliciousness air every Monday in December on MTV at 10pm ET/PT.
