Jennifer Hudson Offered Precious Role Before Gabourey Sidibe
Could Jennifer Hudson have had two Oscars on her shelf right now, instead of just one? The actress reveals in her new book I Got This: How I Changed My Ways and Lost What Weighed Me Down that director Lee Daniels had offered her the lead role in his awards-sweeping film Precious before he went to Gabourey Sidibe.
Most interestingly, Hudson admits that she turned the part down because she didn't want to play another fat girl. "I had done that with Effie ... and as much as I was moved by this film, I wanted to try a role that had nothing whatsoever to do with my weight," she says in the book, according to The Village Voice. She instead went on to co-star in the first Sex and the City movie.
While some would argue that Hudson's reasoning was vain and cost her several awards and many accolades, it's hard to argue that Sidibe was not perfect for the part, and deserves the effect it had on her career. Besides, what's wrong with a girl wanting to do a film in which she gets such fabulous clothes?
On another note … if the book contains more juicy tidbits like this one, Hudson's book looks like it's going to get her another kind of recognition: best-selling author.
