Who is Karlous, One-Third Of The 85 South Show?

He coined the phrase “Black men don’t cheat”.

The 85 South Show is returning to host the 16th annual BET Hip Hop Awards for the second consecutive time this Tuesday, October 5 at 9 PM ET/PT on BET.

The comedic supergroup, composed of DC Young Fly, Karlous Miller, and Chico Bean, have been some of the hottest comedians out, reinventing the stand-up comedy model by incorporating hip hop, going on stage in threes and abandoning all unspoken rules that were set up before them.

While the three comedians are a force as a group, each have something unique to offer as well. Like Karlous Miller, for example.

Hailing from Oxford, Mississippi, Karlous Miller also got his shine from making a stamp on Nick Cannon’s improv comedy program. After serving as a regular on the fifth season in 2013, Miller was elevated to co-host. He has also made appearances on such television shows as Hell Date, Comic View and The Mo'Nique Show. Additionally, Karlous Miller was 1st runner up on NBC’s Last Comic Standing.

With the ceremony around the corner here’s a closer look at the 85 South crew member.

  1. Coined "Black Men Don't Cheat"

Back in 2019, “Black men don’t cheat'' became an inescapable viral movement that included hashtags, TikToks and even a studio single cut by comedian Lil Duval and commentator Charlamagne tha God.

Well, we owe that moment to none other than Karlos Miller. While he didn’t create it — he gives credit to a comedic writer and producer Clint Coley — he helped popularize the phrase, using it on social media until it went viral several times.

  2. Was a Firefighter

Karlous did not have one of those fairytale success stories where he was discovered as a young talent, cultivated and groomed in the industry. The 38-year-old comedian was actually a firefighter.

"That was the best job I ever had....til we had a REAL fire," he jokes in a 2017 episode of their podcast.

  3. Wild ‘N’ Fall Out

Karlous had a falling out with Nick Cannon back in 2018 which led to being fired from the show.

While the two have since patched it up, chalking the dispute up to a communication breakdown, Kalrous explains to the Breakfast Club how a joke about going on a date with his ex, Mariah Carey, and her new guy, was what sent things overboard.

I guess you shouldn’t make fun of the boss’ girl.

  5. Jumped Around A Lot

If Karlous was anything after moving to Atlanta to pursue his career in comedy, it was persistent.

While he’s most famous for his stint on Wild ‘N Out and for the 85 South Show podcast, the southern comedian made sure to try his hand at everything he could to break until then.

From MTV's Yo Momma and being featured on season two as one of the semi-finalists of Bill Bellamy's Who's Got Jokes to landing on the second season of the BET prank-dating series, Hell Date, he left no stone unturned.

Additionally,  Karlous worked with headlining comedians and artists such as Katt Williams, Daniel Tosh and others.
