Inayah Is Determined To Share Her Gift With The World

The Houston native discusses her forthcoming album "Wait, There’s More", overcoming personal struggles, and how she became a part of "The. Ms. Pat Show."

Inayah is an exceptionally talented artist who went from writing jingles to composing her own songs that have garnered her national attention.

Born and raised in the city of Houston, Inayah came to prominence by sharing cover videos of R&B songs on social media which received co-signs from legends such as Jamie Foxx and Maxwell.

A one-of-a-kind artist, Inayah's songs empower women to break away from toxic relationships to walk in their God-given power. She writes fearless anthems that has thrilled her dedicated fan base since 2018.

Her forthcoming album, Wait, There’s More, is set to be released in April and includes the first single “For the Streets”, a remake of Fantasia's "When I See You." Described as an anti-love anthem, it “serves as a powerful declaration for those breaking free from the shackles of toxic relationships."

The project also features upcoming singles "Hot Sauce," "Pacquiao" and "Pretty Girls," which showcase Inayah’s bigger-than-life persona, and her exceptional vocal delivery.

BET.com spoke with the songstress about the impact of growing up in her hometown and how she discovered her love of music at an early age.

“Houston is a trendsetting city. We have so many influences like Beyonce, Destiny's Child, Megan Thee Stallion, Lizzo, and  Normani,” Inayah said.  “In rap, we have UGK, Slim Thug, and many more so it was already imprinted there anyway.”

“I've been singing since I was two. My mom realized very early on that I had the gift and she nurtured it. I knew keys, pitch changes, octaves, and harmony,” Inayah continued. “She taught me and my sisters “End of the Road" by Boyz II Men and that's how we learned how to sing in harmony.”

Although she’s been a force on the music scene for several years, dealing with postpartum depression with her last child greatly diminished her creative drive.

“After my baby was born, I had a tough postpartum journey. I felt like that time took all of my words and I had nothing to say,” she said. "I had nothing to write, and I felt completely overwhelmed by motherhood. I had a tough delivery and I went through an emergency C-section so I had to recover from that. I had to find my voice again."

Eventually, Inayah came out of that season with renewed energy and a determination to empower her fans with her experiences.

As she began to work on ideas for Wait, There’s More, she was approached to reinterpret an R&B classic. Without question, remaking a Fantasia song is a tall order and was something that Inayah wanted to avoid. It wasn’t until she was convinced by her A&R that she took on the challenge of reworking the song.

“I did not want to touch that song I’ll be honest, When I was listening with the beats, he went over a few things and I skipped that one track. My A&R came into the room and was like, “Why did you skip this one?” she recalled. “If you’re singing a song from one of the greats, you better do it and do it right."

"So I said, 'I'll give it a shot. But if they hate me for it, I'm blaming it on you.' Now the streaming is going crazy. I just can't believe that Fantasia and her team even said yes when they heard it."

So far, the song has earned almost two million views and counting on YouTube in just over a month.

Expressing her excitement about the album, Inayah said that she worked with several producers who each brought their distinct style to the project. BoogzDaBeastboost, Pyro Da God, Killah B, Ali Prowl, and Reece Beats all contribute to the project.

“I'm telling you, I'm finally back in my creative bag with it. I’m giving my fans everything they love about me like the wittiness, the sh*t talking, the quotables, and the confidence that they all got to know me for in the first place," she said.

In addition to her thriving career as a singer/songwriter on the rise, Inayah is also a budding actress. Currently, she is a part of the cast of The Ms.Pat Show which airs on BET +. She detailed how she made her transition into acting.

“Becoming an actor wasn't planned but I do like to say that I've always known that I would be in this space,” she said. “I just was never sure how it would come about. But God showed me this promise a very long time ago. So when things come into fruition now I just be like, ‘Oh my God, you said he was going to do it.”

Ms. Pat found me on Instagram and she sent me a direct message saying that she wanted me to try out for a part in the show. I passed on it and I said, ‘Ms. Pat, thank you so much for considering me but I'm no actress. I'm just silly like that on Instagram. I don't want to embarrass myself on TV. So I'm gonna pass on this one."

Thankfully, Ms. Pat would not let her miss this opportunity.

"So she said to me, ‘What's your number?’ I gave her my phone number she called me up and said, ‘Girl if you don’t get your a** down to Atlanta and try out for this show!" she laughed.

“She is the same way on and off camera and it made me gravitate to her," she continued. "I did the audition and I got the part. I'm on to season four with them now."

After going through a time where she dealt with tremendous challenges, Inayah couldn’t be happier to share her story of perseverance and how what she's gone through has shaped her as an artist.

“When I got back in the studio, I wanted to sing about the trials and journey through postpartum and how I survived it,” she said.
