Jeezy Makes Major Move From His Auntie's House to the Church House
Jeezy is ready to preach. The Georgia rapper released new music this Sunday as part of his weekly #SundayService series, a series of hip hop sermons with the goal of sparking conversation around the social and political issues of the day.
This week’s release, titled “Church in These Streets,” introduces Jeezy's persona to the masses: “Call me Pastor Young, I came to spread the word / Spread the word like my partners spray them birds.”
It's a natural move for an artist who is becoming increasingly politically active and spiritually aware. Jeezy recently released a song titled “God” and has penned a powerful letter about police violence against African-Americans, written to “express [his] concerns and frustrations on what’s going on in our communities all over the world today.” He argues that there are not enough job opportunities available and Black men on parole are even less likely to find meaningful work. Jeezy writes, “They are forced to return to the only way they know to survive. That means sacrificing his freedom and life for his family’s survival.”
Jeezy has often spoken out about the injustices the African-American community has suffered due to racial profiling. After the decision to not charge Darren Wilson, the officer who shot Michael Brown, he said, “Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice and Akai Gurley all had their lives and dreams taken by the same people that pledged to uphold the community, this has to stop, may God be with Ferguson, and may our prayers be answered.”
