Soul Train Awards 2022: Get to Know Hollywood’s Rising Star Skyh Black
Veteran songwriter and breakthrough singer Muni Long started the Soul Train Awards 2022 night off with a theatrical r&b performance of her latest hit, “Plot Twist,” which featured several cameos from some familiar and a couple of new ones, including social media-born comedian and host DC Young Fly, actresses Erica Ash and Paige Hurd, and seasoned actor and model Skyh Black, who stole the spotlight as the singer’s cheating love interest.
If you missed this year’s celebration of soul and r&b, all hosted by the hilariously funny Deon Cole, then you missed a one-of-a-kind performance you can only find on the Soul Train Awards. As we look back at yet another fantastic show, get to know more about this year’s surprise guest Skyh Alvester Black.
He’s proud of his Miami roots
Skyh isn’t embarrassed by his difficult upbringing growing up in Miami and has even told Bleu Magazine, “I always tell people ‘the real Miami isn’t South Beach. I’m from the hood.”
Debbi Allen inspired him to pursue acting
“Debbie Allen…she is the one who pushed me into being an actor,” he said in a vintage interview. “Her exact words were, ‘I’m going to make your a– an actor.’” He continued, “I said, ‘No, you’re not because that’s not me.’ She said, ‘Honey, you don’t know who you are yet.’ She was right.”
He experienced homelessness on three occasions
While pursuing his career in acting, Skyh experience homelessness on three separate occasions. Following a gig on the MTV Music Awards as a dancer, further opportunities were hard to come by.
In an interview last year, the actor said, “I would stay in Motel 6, just by having friends who had someone as an employee that would just give me a little $60 discount. I had repossessions. You just got to persevere and keep going.”
