Get to Know Pharrell's Backup Dancers in Meet the Baes
In a genre of music that often holds mysoginistic and objectified views of women, Pharrell has always been a standout for his geniune admiration for the other gender. The singer, producer and all-around creative genius pours his love for women of all types into Meet the Baes, a ten-part series that is an ode to his backup dancers.
The series introduces each of the dancers and singers — some of whom were scouted from social media — who perform alongside Pharrell on stage. We learn why this select group of talented and empowered young women were hand-picked by Pharrell and legendary choreographer Fatima Robinson to create a team of performers known as "The Baes." This uplifting series focuses on how these women worked toward their success and are able to live their dreams.
Says Pharrell, “I have been touring the world with an amazing group of people supporting me on and off stage. The Baes are a large part of the experience and I am so grateful to them for their hard work and dedication. The name of the album is G I R L, and each of these women brings her own unique energy and talents to the equation. Without them, there is no show.”
Between Pharrell and the Baes, the respect is mutual. “We each get our moment to shine on the stage every night. I never experienced [a situation] where the artist introduces us as artists” says dancer Ai Shimatsu. “He told us just be ourselves; that he will respect us as artists” says another performer, Aye Hasegawa.
It's clear Skateboard P treats his team like family. Watch the fun below in this trailer for Meet the Baes!
