Alicia Keys Releases a Special Video in Honor of Prince's Birthday
Alicia Keys is celebrating Prince’s birthday today (June 7) the best way she knows how — through her music.
The singer shared a tribute in honor of her idol, who would have turned 58 today.
Keys is celebrating Prince's birthday by releasing a video of her performing the song, “How Come You Don’t Call Me."
The filmed rendition of the song comes from a performance on April 22 at the Highline Ballroom, just one day after Prince’s tragic passing.
The singer was also able to remake the track back in 2001 for her album Songs in A Minor. In the tribute video, Keys shares how she was able to win over Prince’s blessing in order to be able to officially cover the song.
“[Prince] had never allowed anybody to sing that song before,” she said. “The day came and somehow we arranged a phone call with Prince. At the time, I had never spoken to Prince before. I was so nervous. I was like, ‘What am I gonna say? How am I gonna convince him? I don’t want to beg him...But I kind of want to beg him.
“He was like, ‘You know I never let anybody do my songs, right?'” she recalls in the video. “I was like, ‘I heard that before.’ He was like, ‘But I’ve been watching you. I’ve been seeing what you’re doing and I’d love for you to do my song.'”
Talk about an amazing (and rare) compliment to cherish, especially coming from the mastermind himself.
