Watch Newcomer Shanice Williams's Epic Audition for Dorothy in The Wiz
The Wiz Live! has finally found its Dorothy! Newcomer Shanice Williams, 19, was chosen from thousands in an open call to land the role of the Kansas native who gets caught up in a wind storm and turns up in the magical land of Oz.
Williams will join Queen Latifah and Mary J. Blige, who play the title role and the Wicked Witch of the West, respectively. David Alan Grier has also been cast as the Cowardly Lion in the NBC live musical, which will air on December 3.
The multicultural "retelling" of The Wizard of Oz opened on Broadway in 1975 and won seven Tony Awards, including best musical. During its four year run, the musical was turned into a film in 1978, starring Diana Ross as Dorothy, Michael Jackson, Lena Horne and Richard Pryor.
