Hip Hop Awards 2022: Flashback to When Tyler, the Creator Dominated the Hip Hop Awards 2021
Since emerging with Odd Future in 2007, Tyler, the Creator has continued pushing the boundaries of his craft. 2021 saw the rapper’s artistry reach new heights with a DJ Drama-narrated LP titled Call Me if You Get Lost; it was critically acclaimed and rightfully so. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking Tyler’s second No. 1 album.
At the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards, the emcee took home three wins, including “Hip Hop Album of The Year,” “Culture Influence,” and more. Hip Hop Album of the Year award
Tyler earned one of the most coveted awards of the 2021 ceremony taking the “Hip Hop Album of the Year” award for his Call Me If You Get Lost LP. He won over several rappers in the category including Moneybagg Yo's A Gangsta’s Pain, Migos' Culture III, DJ Khaled's Khaled Khaled, Megan Thee Stallion's Good News, 21 Savage and Metro Boomin's Savage Mode II, and J. Cole's The Off-Season.
During his acceptance speech, the rapper thanked rap music and his fellow peers in the genre before adding “…. I love rap music, I'm so hyped. I love everybody here. Thank you, very much!"
Rock the Bells Cultural Influence Award
During the 2021 ceremony, Tyler was honored with the Rock the Bells Cultural Influence Award presented by Hip-hop icon and Rock the Bells founder LL Cool J.
In his freestyled BET speech, he stated that rap is “opening the doors and throwing the key” for people like him to enter a realm they didn’t feel they had access to before, adding: “just crazy that the things that we were able to see and experience because of this thing called rap and hip-hop.”
He continued, “With rap, it’s like a pathway for a lot of us to really just go, to leave, to experience… new shit that we’re not usually allowed to see because of where we grew up.”
Best Live Performer
Tyler took home the win for “Best Live Performer” beating Cardi B. DaBaby, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, and industry veteran Busta Rhymes.
