Jerry Wonda: We’re Going to Hear Something Special From Olivia
Nowadays Olivia is known more as a reality-show star than as a singer. But producer Jerry Wonda is looking to reverse that equation. The renowned beatmaker and new label exec, who recently launched Wonda Music, has big plans for the former G-Unit songstress.
In an exclusive sit-down with BET.com, Wonda — who won Grammys and platinum plaques for co-producing Whitney Houston's "My Love Is Your Love," Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" and other mega-smashes alongside his former music partner Wyclef Jean — discussed his recent deal with Olivia and what's next for the star of VH1's Love and Hip Hop.
Wonda, real name Jerry Duplessis, says the deal came together after the pair collaborated on the song "Walk Away" on the second season of the buzzed-about reality show.
"I’ve known Olivia for years, since the beginning. She’s like family," he explained. "When we did Love & Hip Hop, she decided to come and see me for a quick song. After that, everybody on Twitter was saying I was the best person to work with her. It’s like a little bell went off. I spoke to her and said I could just bring her to Wonda Music. She was into it, and that was it. I’m really excited."
Wonda and Olivia have begun working on her new album, titled Show the World, but he says the pair plans to strike while the iron is hot.
"We’re just about to attack. We’re about to start recording ASAP, and when I say ASAP, I mean starting today," Wonda said. "We got a number one song we’re sitting on. She’s a great writer."
Wonda, who's also recently produced for Akon, French Montana, Keri Hilson and Estelle, says that Olivia is a "global artist" who can make a huge impact.
"I want to let people know they're going to hear something special from her," Wonda said. "All of her fans have been waiting for a great album, and this time they’re going to get it."
