Teddy Riley Talks His Verzuz Battle With Babyface, And The One Song He Wishes He'd Produced

The R&B legend gave his thoughts on a round two with Babyface, and what it was really like working with Michael Jackson.

We're no longer living in the golden era of R&B that Teddy Riley so artfully pioneered but his Verzuz battle with Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds thrust both of them back into the public’s consciousness. The riveting display between two R&B legends was a historic moment for the music community.

  • BET Digital’s 106&Park Mic Check caught up with Riley to hear his thoughts on some of his fan’s most pressing questions. While Riley is grateful that the Babyface battle had such a strong resonance online, he has some other ideas in mind for future collabs.

“I'm still doing what I do. I would say I'm actually more creative because my mind is so into what am I going to do when I get outta here,” he told BET. Riley had many stories to share about his journey through the music industry -- from his greatest regrets to the time Michael Jackson left him hanging in the studio in the middle of recording “Remember The Time.”

  • “[While] working on the song, we didn't finish that song right then and there. Michael did the first verse and he basically got on a flight to Switzerland,” Riley recounted. “I didn't even know he left the studio and I was waiting there to see if he was coming back to sing the second verse.”

Check out the rest of the episode to hear his favorite Guy song, the one artist he regrets not working with, and the one piece of advice he’d tell Young Teddy.
