Look: Jury Reaches Verdict In Derrick Rose Rape Trial As Player Poses With Juror
On Wedensday, a federal jury cleared NBA star Derrick Rose and his two friends, Randall Hampton and Ryan Allen, of allegations that they drugged and gang-raped Rose's ex-girlfriend.
The dispute at the center of the $21 million lawsuit was not over the question of whether the three men had sex with the woman, known simply as "Jane Doe" through the trial, but whether she had consented to the tryst or was too intoxicated to do so.
Over the course of the ten-day trial, lawyers for the woman argued that the trio of men drugged and raped her, and she had been so intoxicated after leaving Rose's rented Beverly Hills home that she had required help from a cab driver to reach her front door. The jury, however, sided with the defense, stating that Doe had failed to prove that she was too intoxicated to give consent, or that the three men had administered any substance that would prevent her from doing so.
While the civil trial is over, the controversy is not, as Rose was pictured taking photographs with members of the jury shortly after the conclusion, forcing many to question whether or not there was bias present in their ruling.
Many have taken to Twitter to express their anger and doubt about whether the young woman received a fair trial.
Despite the post-trial drama, Rose's legal team said in their closing arguments that his former girlfriend had faked the accusation in order to extort money, adding that she was still spurned by the fact that he had broken up with her after she had consented to the group sex.
Rose spoke to press following the verdict, "I am thankful the jury understood and agreed with me," he said of the 10-day trial. "This experience and my sensitivity to it was deep. I am ready to put this behind me and focus on my family and career."
While attorneys for the woman were not available for comment after the verdict, Hampton and Allen's attorney, Michael Monico, told Buzzfeed that they are "very, very happy for the verdict." Adding, "It is amazing how just one person can cause this much injury and harm to these three young men...It was really, really painful, but I'm glad the jury saw it that way."
