Tyler, the Creator Shares 8th Grade Throwback Talent Show Win with Omarion's 'Touch' Performance
Tyler, the Creator won big when performing a choreographed routine to the 2005 Omarion single “Touch” in 8th grade.
On Sunday, December 1, the rapper-producer, who released his eighth studio album, Chromakopia, in October, shared the throwback footage in an Instagram carousel dedicated to his middle school years. The clip shows Tyler, born Tyler Okonma–declared the winner of the grade school talent show–hitting his best pop and lock moves to the track, produced by his idols, The Neptunes, composed of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo.
“04-05 Dana Middle School Hawthorne, CA,” he captioned the post. “tech deck chain hung heavy.”
Following the clip are a few middle school candids of the 2-time Grammy winner, one black-and-white photo showing him rocking what appears to be the “tech deck chain.”
According to Complex, Tyler continued reliving his childhood in his Instagram Stories, where he shared that he’s “ really never been scared” and was “always special.” He followed by sharing that green was his favorite color and shouting out the “Tyrone big gums lift up” move that he did during the talent show.
The “Noid” rapper added that some of his favorite albums at the time were The White Stripes’ Elephant, Snoop Dogg’s Rhythm & Gangsta, Kelis’ Wanderlust, while he kept Dave Chappelle’s former sketch comedy show Chappelle’s Show “on repeat.” “What a time,” he concluded.
Tyler previously mentioned his “Touch” performance during a 2015 interview with Nardwuar, when he was asked about the talent show.
“I used to dance. I still can dance. I'm Black,” he joked around the 9-minute mark of the video below. “I danced to ‘Touch’ by Omarion and the s*** was tight. I won the talent show and I did the dance moves and s***. That s*** was tight.”
