Trent Richardson Released by Raiders
Coming out of Alabama as the third overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, Trent Richardson had plenty of promise.
But that promise has turned into a bust of an NFL career, one that currently has him unemployed. The Oakland Raiders released the running back Monday, as reported by ESPN, after he averaged just 2.8 yards per carry during their first three preseason games. The Raiders will go with Latavius Murray and Roy Helu Jr. in their backfield instead.
The blunt transaction has led to critics slamming Richardson, with former NFL player Damien Woody even comparing him to JaMarcus Russell, a former Raiders draft pick and the biggest bust in league history.
After rushing for 950 yards and 11 touchdowns with the Cleveland Browns during his rookie season in 2012, Richardson's production has dipped rather dramatically. Richardson rushed for 563 yards and three touchdowns playing with both the Browns and Indianapolis Colts in 2013 before mustering 519 more yards on the ground and three more scores last season.
Despite the slide, Richardson is only 25, meaning he could be a low-risk, high-reward option for a team searching for a backup running back.
After being cut by the Raiders, though, it will be interesting to see if Richardson gets that chance.
