Jazmine Sullivan Talks Her Five-Year Relationship, Her Prayer For Love, Opening For Metallica, And What She’s Calling Into Her Life
Jazmine Sullivan is one of the best singers of our time and is headed to perform for the first time at this year’s Lollapalooza opening up for Metallica today (July 28th).
In addition to her Lollapalooza appearance, the R&B songstress recently partnered with IHG Hotels & Resorts for their inaugural ‘Guest How Jazmine Sullivan Guests’ suite will feature the artist’s favorite ways to guest as well as hand-selected travel amenities and must-haves, including her favorite calming scents, vegan snacks, and immunity-strengthening pressed juices.
Sullivan chatted with BET.com about her partnership and shared her prayer which manifested her current 5-year relationship and her advice for younger artists.
BET.com: You’ve been quiet for a bit, what have you been working on or up to at this time that you can share with BET.com?
Jazmine Sullivan: The tours have been really important to me kind of getting out there and seeing the fans, touching the fans, and doing this music. I've been working in a studio working on some collabs and it'll be out soon but kind of just taking my time. I haven’t done a lot of collaborations in my career so I’m doing more now. I've also been redecorating my house and trying to figure out how I want the house to look.
BET.com: How are you setting up your Lollapalooza performance? Any other elements you want to add to your set you haven’t done before? Or any song selections you want to add?
Sullivan: It’s definitely going to feel like the ‘Reality Show’ tour and bringing that to the masses and with shows like this, you get introduced to fans that wouldn’t necessarily listen to you or even know about you.
BET.com: Do you know what songs you need to add to the setlist? You need to add “After The Hurricane” and “Stupid Girl.”
Sullivan: You know the songs and everything [laughs]. I haven’t done “Stupid Girl” since the ‘Reality Show’ tour and I was actually thinking about bringing it back. I’ll bring it back just for you.
BET.com: Heaux Tales is definitely, if not already, going down as a classic album…are there any recent “dating tales” you can share with BET.com?
Sullivan: Well, my dating life is great. I’ve actually been in a relationship for five years. It’s really about finding somebody that truly loves you and supports you. That’s the space that I’m in — positive vibes and no busting windows over here [laughs].
BET.com: What was Jazmine’s prayer?
Sullivan: Jazmine’s prayer is all about self-love and really loving who you are — growing into that.
BET.com: You recently put on your story a question to your fans “What are you praying for?” Well Jazmine, let BET.com know what you’re currently praying for / calling into your life and how are you actively taking the necessary steps to get to your ask?
Sullivan: I’m praying for just amazing health. I don't know if everybody knows but my mom's cancer has resurfaced. So I am always just praying for her to get better and everybody who is going through breast cancer — just always pray for everybody so that we all can live our best lives.
BET.com: I’m going to pray for you as well because my mom just beat cancer so I’ll keep you in my prayers, too.
Sullivan: That’s amazing and thank you.
BET.com: I’m sure we’re in the early stages, but have you been working on a new project as of now, and is there a new direction?
Sullivan: I kind of just do what feels natural to me. When it came to Heaux Tales, I was in a space where I want to talk about the things that I discussed with my girlfriends and creating a space for women to just be free and honest about the things they've been through so we all can help each other and grow. I don't know where I'll be when I start working on the new album, but you know, wherever it is I just want to be authentic to me and be real.
BET.com: Any advice to younger artists and any younger artists you would to collab with?
Sullivan: My advice to younger artists — I would definitely say to be yourself, definitely. If you get in a position like me, where I'm at where you can be able to collaborate with the people that you want to work with, make sure that it feels right. I’m working with IHG hotels, and it's just a really good fit as far as making sure that you work with people who care about you and they care about the experience that you have. I care about my music and I want to make sure that when people listen to my music, they know that this is coming from my heart.Definitely just making sure that the people that you work with are sharing the same vision.
