Cardi B Makes History As The First Woman To Win ASCAP’s Songwriter Of The Year For Second Year In A Row
Cardi B has just made history again.
This week, ASCAP unveiled who will be taking top honors at the annual ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Awards, which began virtually on Wednesday (July 15) and runs through Friday (July 17).
The Rhythm & Soul Awards recognizes the top songs across R&B, hip-hop, and gospel music.
At this year’s virtual event, Cardi was crowned songwriter of the year. This marks the second year in a row that the“Bodak Yellow” rapper has received the recognition and, according to Billboard, it’s the first time a female songwriter has pulled off the feat in the award’s history. Only three other women have previously taken home the accolade: Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss in 2000, Alicia Keys in 2005, and Mary J. Blige in 2007.
DaBaby and Meek Mill also won big. Meek’s 2018 chart-topper “Going Bad,” which he co-wrote with Westen Weiss, was declared Top Rap Song while DaBaby’s “Suge” took home Top R&B/Hip-Hop Song. DaBaby co-wrote “Suge” with JetsonMade.
“Deliver Me (This is my Exodus),” written by Desmon Davis, Marshon Lewis and Rob “Code Lei” Woolridge, was this year’s Top Gospel Song.
Viewers can also tune to the 2020 ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Awards to catch performances from winners Anthony Brown and Nicole Bus. Jermaine Dupri is set to host an Instagram live DJ set “after party” on @jermainedurpri on Friday, July 17 beginning at 4PM ET. Find out more at www.ascapexperience.com.
