Cardi B Makes History As The First Woman To Win ASCAP’s Songwriter Of The Year For Second Year In A Row

Only three other women have previously taken home the accolade.

Cardi B has just made history again. 

  • This week, ASCAP unveiled who will be taking top honors at the annual ASCAP Rhythm  & Soul Awards, which began virtually on Wednesday (July 15) and runs through Friday (July 17). 

    The Rhythm & Soul Awards recognizes the top songs across R&B, hip-hop, and gospel music. 

    At this year’s virtual event, Cardi was crowned songwriter of the year. This marks the second year in a row that the“Bodak Yellow” rapper has received the recognition and, according to Billboard, it’s the first time a female songwriter has pulled off the feat in the award’s history. Only three other women have previously taken home the accolade: Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss in 2000, Alicia Keys in 2005, and Mary J. Blige in 2007.

  • DaBaby and Meek Mill also won big. Meek’s 2018 chart-topper “Going Bad,” which he co-wrote with Westen Weiss, was declared Top Rap Song while DaBaby’s “Suge” took home Top R&B/Hip-Hop Song. DaBaby co-wrote “Suge” with JetsonMade

    “Deliver Me (This is my Exodus),” written by Desmon Davis, Marshon Lewis and Rob “Code Lei” Woolridge, was this year’s Top Gospel Song.
