Following his previous singles, “Heartless” and “Blinding Lights,” The Weeknd delves deeper into the heartache and loneliness he’s facing after a recent breakup on “After Hours.” The song’s lyrics have already spawned a few fan theories that the 6-minute track is about his former girlfriend, supermodel Bella Hadid. The two reportedly broke up in 2019 but it seems he’s still pining away for her love and his shortcomings during their relationship continue to haunt him at his darkest hours.

“Where are you now when I need you most? / I'd give it all just to hold you close / Sorry that I broke your heart,” The Weeknd croons to an unnamed lover in the chorus over melancholic, electro-infused instrumentals. “I said, baby, I'll treat you better than I did before / I'll hold you down and not let you go / This time, I won't break your heart.” 

In conjunction with his album’s roll-out, the Toronto-born singer also graced the cover of CR Men for the publication's forthcoming Issue 10 where he broke down some of the inspiration behind his new album, which drops on March 20. He also touched on his relationship with drugs and a recent appearance in the Safdie brothers critically-acclaimed film, Uncut Gems, alongside Adam Sandler.

"I feel confident with where I’m taking this [new] record,” he told CR Men. “There’s also a very committed vision and character being portrayed and I get to explore a different side of me that my fans have never seen.”

The XO label honcho revealed “Heartless” was the first song he wrote after 2018’s My Dear Melancholy that gives fans some insight into what that rest of his new album will sound like. Recently, The Weeknd posted a preview of the album’s cover on Instagram where he revealed After Hours will have at least 13 tracks.

“It felt fitting for me to put it out,” he explained. “I play a character in the video who becomes compromised and then overcompensates with all the sins that Vegas provides. It’s a great introduction to the next chapter of my life.”

After Hours will be The Weeknd’s first album release since Starboy dropped in 2016. Shortly after his latest single dropped, he also announced he will be going on tour in June. Tickets go on presale next Tuesday, February 25.
