Oscar De La Hoya Won't Unretire to Face Floyd Mayweather Jr.
It's not going to happen.
Oscar De La Hoya killed any speculation about possibly coming out of retirement to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. and he did it with a single Instagram video.
"Look...I'm retired, I'm happy, I'm content, I'm never coming back," De La Hoya says in the clip. "I'm going to continue growing Golden Boy [Promotions]."
It's an about face of what De La Hoya told "The Cruz Show" on Power 106, as reported by TMZ Sports earlier this month, that he's strongly considering a comeback.
"If I did make a comeback, I would fight the best, whoever it is, but I would want to fight someone that's gonna fight me back," De La Hoya said at the time.
Upon hearing that, Mayweather, who's still looking for a worthy opponent to put his undefeated record up against in September, said he'd be willing to grant the 42-year-old Oscar De La Hoya a rematch.
"If he wants to, we could rock and roll in September," Mayweather confirmed with Yahoo Sports and BlackSportsOnline. "He said he wanted a rematch. If Oscar want it, he could get it."
Well, that's not going to happen.
Before De La Hoya set the record straight, there had also been rumored reports about him possibly taking on undefeated knockout artist Gennady Golovkin. Triple G and Mayweather even exchanged words earlier this week, sparking the outside possibility of the two unbeaten boxers facing off. If anything, at least that one has a chance of being delivered.
Mayweather scored a split-decision win over Oscar De La Hoya back in May 2007. The fight set the then-pay-per-view record of $136 million, before it was shattered by the $400 million that Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao did last month.
