Must-See: Viola Davis Talks Challenges in Hollywood, New Baby and More

The actress gives an impassioned speech at awards event, which earns her a standing ovation.

Oscar-nominated actress Viola Davis has turned in yet another breathtaking, amazing performance, but this time it was is in the form of an acceptance speech at a recent awards event.

At the Elle’s Women in Hollywood awards this week, the 46-year old Julliard graduate gave a rousing, impromptu speech that earned her a standing ovation. The candid talk detailed her challenges and journey as a Black actress in Tinseltown, plus, how her humble beginnings greatly influenced her career. Check out the video above.

And after putting in what most critics are describing as a soon-to-be Oscar-nominated turn in this year’s surprise box office hit, '60s period drama The Help, Davis has also been busy at work developing new film projects for herself to star in.

One new movie in the pipeline for Davis’ newly formed JuVee production company will be assembling the film biopic on Vivian Carter, according to The Guardian. Carter, the owner and founder of Vee Jay Records, is responsible for signing such legendary acts as John Lee Hooker and Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. And most notably, Carter’s Vee Jay record label was the first to bring The Beatles to the U.S. market.

Bringing this music trailblazer's unsung story to the big screen is just one example of the larger work Davis wants to accomplish in Hollywood. She told The Guardian, “I want to be a pioneer; I want to take on the responsibility and the weight of something bigger than myself, which is more diverse storylines, especially for Black actresses.”
