Ray Lewis III Died of Accidental Drug Overdose, Cops Say

The former college football player was found dead earlier this week.

Former college football player and son of NFL Hall of Famer Ray Lewis III was found dead earlier this week at 28. TMZ is now reporting that the cause of his death was an accidental drug overdose.

TMZ Sports obtained a copy of the report from the responding Florida police department which indicated that they responded to a call on June 16 for a medical emergency and found an unresponsive Lewis, who was getting CPR from a friend while another friend was screaming for Narcan (a drug used during overdoses).

According to the report, Lewis was lying naked in a room, between a bed and a wall and he was not breathing.

Narcan was administered in Lewis' right nostril--but he remained unresponsive.

The report also notes that officers searched the room and found a blue pill near Lewis' body, which they unofficially identified as Alprazolam (the drug in brands like Xanax). Police also say there was a used needle at the scene, plus a small plastic bag found inside of an empty beer can.

The determination of an accidental overdose is only preliminary. A medical examiner will make the final cause of death announcement.

Lewis' death was confirmed by his brother Rahsaan in an Instagram post where he wrote, "Really can't believe I'm even typing this but RIP big brother. A true angel I pray your at peace now because [I know] how much you was [really] hurtin I don't and won't ever have the words man cuz this pain right here," his post read. “I love you I love you I love you your niece gone miss you but she will hear about u over and over just watch over us all big bruh be our guardian I promise I'll make you smile and proud."

Lewis is the son of Baltimore Ravens legend Ray Lewis. He followed in his father's famous footsteps and starred as a running back at Lake Mary Prep High School in Florida. In his high school career, he rushed for 5,283 yards and scored 53 touchdowns in three seasons, according to Max Preps.

He later played at three different colleges before landing Virginia Union University to end his collegiate career. Switching to defense at Virginia Union, Lewis posted 37 tackles in his only season.
