Michael K. Williams: Third Man Involved In Accidental Overdose Receives 5-Year Prison Sentence
A third man involved in the 2021 fentanyl-related accidental overdose of actor Michael K. Williams was sentenced to five years in prison, USA Today reports.
Luis Cruz, a New York City drug-dealing crew member, received his sentence on Tuesday (Oct. 10) in a Manhattan court before a federal judge. Cruz, one of the four defendants in the fatal drug deal, pleaded guilty in April to a lesser charge of narcotics conspiracy.
Three of the four drug dealers have now been sentenced. Irvin Cartagena, 40, the man who sold the drugs to Williams, received a 10-year prison sentence in August. Another crew member (Carlos Macci, 72) was sentenced to a little over two years, while a fourth member (Hector Robles) awaits his sentencing.
All four men pleaded not guilty in March 2022 to charges related to Williams' death. Prosecutors provided cell phone records, social media posts, lab reports and medical examiner records before their court appearances to support their convictions.
In a letter to the judge, Cruz said he worked as an electrician and sold drugs to support his own drug addiction and pay bills.
“It was a terrible mistake in judgment,” Cruz stated in his letter.
Cruz’ lawyer, Deborah Colson, expressed in an email to USA Today that her client “accepted responsibility and provided a genuine, heartfelt apology.”
Cruz and the other members continued to sell the fentanyl-laced heroin, even after the death of Williams, federal prosecutors say.
54-year-old Williams – who was best known for his role as Omar Little on the hit show The Wire – was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment in September 2021.
