Box Office: Oblivion Tops, 42 Stays Strong
A high-profile divorce and the implosion of Scientology doesn't seem to have put a dent in Tom Cruise's box-office mojo. The global superstar proves audiences still love him by scoring a massive hit with his sci-fi thriller Oblivion.
The film, which also stars Morgan Freeman, topped the domestic box office this weekend after a first place opening overseas last week. The film grossed $38.2 million in North America, bringing its worldwide total to just over $112 million.
Coming up on second base is Jackie Robinson biopic 42, with $18 million. The baseball pic, starring Harrison Ford and Chadwick Boseman, is capitalizing on the baseball fever sweeping the nation with the start of the MLB season. Though it has gotten a lukewarm reception from critics, the film is clearly striking a chord with audiences.
The Croods, G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Scary Movie 5 round out the top five, with Gerard Butler and Angela Bassett's Olympus Has Fallen hanging in the top 10.
Next week, Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson flex for Pain & Gain with Iron Man 3 on deck the following week to kick off the summer box office.
