Acclaimed Documentary Lucky to Screen at Urbanworld

Film chronicles life of homeless mother in NYC.

UPDATE: Lucky was named the Best Documentary prize at this year's Urbanworld Film Festival. The jury, including representatives from CNN and HBO's documentary divisions, awarded director Laura Checkoway with a $5000 prize.

The Urbanworld Film Festival kicks off today and promises four days of great independent cinema in New York City. We've brought you details about offerings from Ava DuVernay, Malik Yoba and Boris Kodjoe during this year's festival, and now we're shining a spotlight on one of the exciting non-fiction films playing this weekend.

Executive produced by Hoop Dreams filmmaker Steve James, Laura Checkoway's documentary Lucky follows Lucky Torres, a homeless mother masked in tattoos who longs to rise from a life of darkness. The film was shot over five years on the streets of New York City and has played at a number of acclaimed film festivals around the world, including HotDocs and the Atlanta Film Festival.
New Yorkers will have their chance to see this moving film during the Urbanworld Film Festival, which runs from September 17-21. Click here for showtimes and more information.
