Drake Reveals Inspiration Behind ‘Hotline Bling’

The rapper also shared which track was inspired by Serena Williams.

Drake’s latest upload, “100gigs for your headtop,” which features a massive folder of old files alongside three new tracks, has fans buzzing. The excitement reached new heights with the discovery of a video within the folder, where the “God’s Plan” emcee reveals a surprising story behind his hit “Hotline Bling.”

In the clip, which seemingly dates back to 2015, the Canadian superstar revealed that the inspiration for the track came from a past romantic encounter.

He explained that “Hotline Bling” originated after he and a mystery woman “used to be in bed together — we just finished f—king, and her phone would be blowing up.” He continued, “I saved her name in my phone as 'Hotline Bling.' That's always been her name on my phone."

Drake playfully mused, “And I was looking at it today, I was like, 'Hotline Bling' is a sick name. That should be an artist name.”

He even mentioned that he discussed the potential of her nickname becoming the title of one of his major hits with the woman herself. “Yo your name, your nickname is such a good title for something,” he said. “And then I just told her today, I was like, you know I did a song called 'Hotline Bling,' that's crazy.”

In another video snippet, Drake is seen in the studio working on “Too Good” featuring Rihanna. While chatting with his mother, Sandi Graham, who is offscreen, he refers to Serena Williams as the song’s inspiration, to which his mother responds, “I gather that.”

Critics question the decision to release the footage years later, including one X user who wrote, “Lmfaooooooo now why did Drake feel the need to release that video of him telling his mom he wrote ‘Too Good’ about/for Serena Williams????“

“Too Good” was the fourth single from Drake’s 2016 album “Views.” It marked his second collaboration with Rihanna after “Work.”
