Disney’s “Prom” Stars the Newest “It” Kids

Who are DeVaughn Nixon and Kylie Bunbury?

Everyone remembers their high school prom, whether it was filled with glitter and glamour or heartache and tears.  Disney’s forthcoming teenage drama, Prom, has managed to successfully highlight the frenzied months leading up to that magical night. Seeking to gain a following like high school cult classics The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and Say Anything, the flick isn’t consumed by glossy musical bits or elaborate sets -- just a fun storyline.

DeVaughn Nixon and newcomer Kylie Bunbury round off the cast of Prom.  You may remember Nixon as Fletcher, Whitney Houston’s son, in 1992’s The Bodyguard. He’s also the son of retired Lakers player Norm Nixon, who’s married to Debbie Allen.

Nixon and Bunbury play Tyler and Jordan, the school’s most popular couple, a shoe-in for prom king and queen, as well as the film’s only African-American stars.  Nixon says he was shocked to find out that his on-screen opposite was a Black female. “There’s no way two Black people are in this movie!” Nixon jokes.   “When I read the script, I thought, ‘Wow, they’re really glorifying our characters and we just happen to be characters of color.’ I thought it was brilliant.”

Ingénue Kylie Bunbury, a former model, admits she was initially intimidated by the role, having no prior acting gigs, but the experience ended up being unforgettable. “It’s a whirlwind. I don’t have proper words to convey what it’s like to be a part of something that I truly think is great,” she tells us. “Being a powerful woman is important to me,” she continues, explaining that she was happy with the way her character handled conflict. “I think Jordan will encourage a lot of young women to maintain their poise when it comes to men.”

Nixon can be seen in the forthcoming indie flick Monsters Heroes, as well as the second season of MTV’s The Hard Times of RJ Berger.  Bunbury just wrapped The Sitter, where she plays Jonah Hill’s romantic opposite.

Disney’s Prom hits theaters April 29th.
