Kelly Rowland Is Calling On Others To Help Empower Young Black Men
Kelly Rowland opened up this weekend (July 3) discussing how when she learned that she and her husband, Tim Witherspoon, were expecting a baby boy, that exciting news wasn’t met without some fears.
"I remember being pregnant with Titan and the moment the doctor said 'It's a boy' and there were all these shootings happening with our young men,” the 35-year-old singer shared. “I just began to weep.”
Rowland served on a panel at a Verizon-sponsored dinner, in conjunction with Essence Festival, where she spoke about her fears raising her son in our country today and how she hopes others will step up to help empower our young Black men.
"I want to raise a great man with respect for himself and others, and to know who he is and to know what his surroundings look like," Rowland said during the panel. "I just feel like there's great responsibility, not just as parents but as a community in raising him."
The singer then continued how much like she has inspired young Black women through her platform as an entertainer, she is calling on her peers in the industry to serve as the same inspiration for young Black men.
"I feel like our boys need to see it more," she continued. “If our athletes and our actors and our executives speak up then they can see themselves and they can hear their stories and they can feel like 'I'm closer to what he's doing or I can do what he's doing.'"
"Our boys matter and their futures matter and they are our future CEO's and they can do whatever they put their mind to and we have to let them know that,” the former Destiny’s Child member added.
We couldn’t agree more, Kelly.
