Kap G Shares How He Landed His Crucial Role in Dope
Pharrell has an impeccable ear for music, but he’s also got an eye for acting talent.
Serving as executive producer of Dope, Skateboard P was instrumental in signing one of his musical protégés — Atlanta rapper Kap G — for the pivotal role of Fidel X.
“Pharrell just thought I’d be the perfect person,” Kap recalls, “so he told the director Rick [Famuyiwa] and they let me audition.”
His role was small, but the first-time actor made every second of his intense scene count.
“I was in Atlanta at the time, so I had sent in a video,” Kap G says of his auditioning process. “They liked it, and I came back the next week and did it. That was crazy.”
Aside from the Sundance darling that lives up to its name, Kap says he’d like to do more acting down the line. In the meantime, he’s focused on his debut EP, El Southside, which will continue to celebrate his Mexican heritage and ATL roots.
