Chicago Mother Sues City, Cops After Prosecutor Drops Murder Charges

‘I've experienced pain in many ways that I would never have thought’ says Carlishia Hood.

Carlishia Hood, who was cleared along with her teenage son of murder charges days after their arrest, is suing the city of Chicago and several police officers, CBS Chicago reports.

"My life changed. My son's life changed. I've experienced pain in many ways that I would never have thought. What happened to me was totally unnecessary. Never in a million years would I have imagined being brutally attacked, beaten, and being arrested," Hood, 35, said Tuesday (June 27) at a press conference with her legal team.

The lawsuit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, accuses the city and the Chicago police of malicious prosecution, false arrest, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Charges Dropped Against Chicago Mother Whose Son Shot Man Who Assaulted Her

Hood and her 14-year-old son turned themselves over to authorities June 22 and were charged with first-degree murder for the killing of Jeremy Brown, 32, who viciously assaulted her in a restaurant. Investigators accused Hood of ordering her son to shoot Brown dead. She was also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. At the time of the incident, Hood was a valid FOID card and concealed carry license holder.

After being changed, Hood was held on a $3 million bond, and her son, who was charged as a juvenile, was held without bail.

Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx said Monday (June 26) that her office dropped the case “based upon our continued review and in light of emerging evidence," adding that prosecutors lacked the evidence to prove the murder charge, according to CBS Chicago.

Prosecutors made that decision after video emerged showing Brown punching Hood at least three times before her son shot him, in what Hood’s attorneys said was an unprovoked attack.

"She was beaten for nothing," attorney Ari Williams said. "Ms. Hood doesn't even understand how it built up. It was unnecessary. It was a vicious attack for no reason."

Hood said she’s now focused on moving forward from the ordeal.

"I just need a little time to heal and spend a little time with my baby," she said.
