Mariah Carey has reunited with her Precious director Lee Daniels for a part in his upcoming sweeping epic, The Butler. Now, a first look at Carey, dressed down in character, has leaked.
Carey plays the mother of protagonist Cecil Gaines, a White House butler who served through eight administrations. Though she only appears in the opening shot of the film, the scene is reportedly very memorable. Carey's portrayal of a field slave in the image has already sparked controversy among fans on social media, many of whom question whether a light-skinned woman like Carey would ever have been kept as a field slave.
This marks the second time Carey has worked with Daniels, who directed her in Precious. "She's a diva, but a lovable one," Daniels said of Carey to Page Six. "She's a lady and fun. She doesn't take her diva role seriously."

The Butler opens on August 16.
