UPDATE: The Associated Press now reports that Prince died from an overdose on "self-administered fentanyl." The drug is a synthetic opiate, and more potent than morphine, accoridng to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The report was also revealed to have been signed by Quinn Strobl, the office's chief medical examiner.

The untimely passing of Prince continues to rock the world as the legendary musician was shockingly pronounced dead at his Minnesota estate in April. Soon after, reports began to swirl of the icon’s use of opioids, linking the 57-year-old’s persistent hip and ankle injuries to the drugs. On Thursday (June 2), a law enforcement official revealed to the Associated Press that Prince did indeed die from an overdose, following investigations of medicines he was prescribed in his final weeks.

Just days before Prince’s death, an emergency landing was enacted for a plane carrying the singer. Reports were released that he had been battling the flu, as Prince took to social media days later. On April 21, he was found unresponsive in the elevator of his Paisley Park studio. When the question of drug use was brought on, the Carver County Sheriff's Office, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Minnesota and the Drug Enforcement Administration all got involved.
Prince’s team reportedly sought the help of addiction specialist Dr. Howard Kornfeld just days before he was found. According to CNN, Kornfeld stated that he was unable to get there in time, and instead sent his son Andrew to help the musician. Andrew Kornfeld was the one who made the emergency call on April 21, when it was unfortunately too late.
The identity of the official who confirmed Prince’s cause of death is unknown; the information was given anonymously because he had not been authorized to speak to the media.
