Amy Winehouse’s Mom Reacts to Her Death

The singer’s mother says the end was “only a matter of time.”

After word of Amy Winehouse's Saturday death hit the airwaves, Internet and streets, celebrities, fans and the media everywhere are reacting to it, especially since the cause of her death remains sketchy, with no official explanation.

Winehouse’s mother Janis told the United Kingdom's Sunday Mirror that she had just seen her daughter the day before her death. “She seemed out of it. But her passing so suddenly still hasn’t hit me,” the paper quoted her as saying. The last things Winehouse said to her mother was “I love you mum,” words she said she will cherish forever.

According to Winehouse’s neighbors, horrible crying was heard around 3:30 a.m. the day police arrived. The European website quotes a friend saying, “She has spent the last seven days on a massive bender and people were saying she’s going to drink herself to death.” Someone else, however, blames it on a bad ecstasy pill combined with alcoholism and emphysema, which she was diagnosed with in 2008 at the age of 24.

Earlier this year in March, the Back to Black singer donated a bunch of Alexander McQueen dresses after moving into her new flat, where she was found dead. Like so many others who have used Twitter as a way to express their grief or disbelief, fellow Londoner M.I.A. shared the lyrics of an unfinished demo called "27" on her page. She now dedicates the track, which is laced with Indian-beats, to Winehouse.

"Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece. She leaves a gaping hole in our lives," Amy Winehouse's family said in a statement.
