YNW Melly’s Mom Demands Investigation Into Alleged Abuse Of Rapper In Jail

The 'Murder On My Mind' rapper recently described the conditions he allegedly experienced behind bars in Florida.

YNW Melly recently described the alleged abuse he’s facing at Florida's infamous Broward County Jail, including extreme isolation while in captivity and from the outside world. Now, his mother is calling for an investigation into what’s happening.

During an interview with TMZ, Melly’s mother, Jamie Demons-King, said the jail has been “making up their own rules” and “definitely needs to be investigated” in regard to inmate treatment.

“We’ve tried to go to court about this situation, [but] the judge doesn’t really have any jurisdiction when it comes to the jail,” she told the news outlet. “We actually had a hearing about the mistreatment of him, and the jail kind of… they make their own rules and I don’t think that’s fair because I know that they need to answer to someone too.”

On Monday (December 12), via a post from his Instagram account, the rapper described how he feared for his life, alleging that he was being surveilled 24/7 and isolated, without any access to a phone, television or news. Melly also accused two employees of the Broward Sheriff’s Office of targeting him with threats, and said he believes they could beat him “half to death like they do to other inmates almost daily.”

“They hold his mail, they don’t give it to him,” Demons-King added while speaking to TMZ. “It’s just not right. … It’s Christmas, and Christmas day is my birthday too, [and] I just want to hear my son’s voice. That’s like the bare minimum, I just want to hear his voice. I just want to hear that he’s okay.” She described his recent posts as “heartbreaking,” and said they made her feel “completely helpless.”

Demons-King also noted that her son has “not been convicted of anything” yet, and even inmates who have been convicted “have the right to use a telephone” while imprisoned.

In July, a Florida judge removed the death penalty option as a possible sentence for YNW Melly, who remains behind bars on double homicide charges. XXL Magazine (via Complex) reports that the 23-year-old rapper, whose legal name is Jamell Maurice Demons, received the news on July 6 during a preliminary hearing in Broward County.

Three years ago, Melly and his associate Cortlen “YNW Bortlen” Henry were arrested and each charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Authorities say the two men fatally shot their friends, 20-year-old Chris “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr. and 21-year-old Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams, in October 2018.

Melly and Bortlen are accused of killing the victims and then attempting to stage the crime scene to resemble a drive-by shooting. The former pled not guilty to the first-degree murder charges in March 2019 and then would go on to address his arrest in a since-deleted Instagram post that same year.
