Trial Begins For The Man Accused Of Killing Nipsey Hussle
The trial has begun for Eric Holder, the man accused in the murder of Nipsey Hussle in 2019.
The trial began on Thursday (June 2) at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Los Angeles. According to CBS News, the jury selection process is expected to last about two weeks and the actual trial itself will last another two weeks.
The trial was beset with multiple delays. Originally scheduled to begin in April 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the trial’s first postponement. Additional trial dates scheduled for May 2021 and December 2021 were delayed when Holder refused to leave his cell. The judge originally assigned to the case retired, and Holder’s original attorney, Christopher Darden, best known as of the prosecutors in O.J. Simpson’s murder trial, recused himself amid death threats to his family.
Holder faces one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. The accused, who was an aspiring rapper who went by the nickname “Fly Mac,” was reportedly a member of the street gang the Rollin' 60s Crips.
On March 31, 2019, Nipsey Hussle, born Airmiess Joseph Asghedom, was shot multiple times and killed while standing in the parking lot of his Marathon Clothing Store location in the Crenshaw district of Los Angeles. He was 33 years old.
Eric Holder has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he faces life in prison.
