Cooking Lesson II: Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett Goes Scorched Earth on Republicans at Hunter Biden Hearing
If Nas’ “Ether” went down in hip-hop history as arguably the best ever diss track, then what happened yesterday can be considered its political equivalent.
The gloves were off in Congress on Wednesday (Jan. 10) during a moment that has gone viral on social media in which Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett blasted her Republican colleagues at the contempt hearing for Hunter Biden, accusing them of hypocrisy and lying.
“You have done it thus far in this investigation; you have done it thus far as it relates to this committee; in every single hearing, y’all spin, spin, spin,” she snapped. “I don’t know how y’all are still standing right now, because you should be quite dizzy from all the spinning that you’re constantly doing when it comes to spinning the truth."
You talk about free and fair elections, but you back a guy who we know tried to steal the election,” she continued, referring to former President Donald Trump.
During the congressional session, a hearing took place where members debated a resolution on holding the son of President Joe Biden in contempt of Congress. Republicans have been trying to accuse Hunter Biden of defying subpoenas from the Oversight and Judiciary Panels, issued as part of the House GOP’s impeachment inquiry into his father, according to .Hunter Biden has also long been the target of Republicans over his foreign business involvement and is currently under investigation by the Justice Department for using his company’s corporate account for tax evasion, a statement from the House oversight committee says. Republicans suspect him of funneling funds from the business to his father, the president.
In a bold move that shocked the room, Hunter Biden made an unexpected appearance at the hearing with his legal team in tow but left after about 30 minutes once lawmakers started attacking him outright. Then they began to argue about whether or not the GOP’s probe had produced any evidence implicating him.
Crockett’s speech was in response to Republican representatives like Georgia’s Marjorie Taylor Greene and South Carolina’s Nancy Mace, who blasted Hunter Biden’s appearance, calling him the “epitome of White privilege” and recommending his immediate arrest. It’s at that point that Crockett ignited.“
I can’t get over the gentle lady from South Carolina talking about white privilege," Crockett noted. "It was a spit in the face, at least of mine as a Black woman, for you to talk about what white privilege looks like.”
She then took her time eviscerating her GOP colleagues for what she felt was behind their actions: an attempt to turn the focus from Trump and the 91 total charges relating to accusations that he attempted to subvert the results of the 2020 election to the Bidens.
“This isn’t about what Democrats have to say,” said Crockett, whose district covers much of Dallas. “Let me remind you for those of you that don’t know how the justice system works. It’s not a matter of [if] the president went in and indicted Trump, but we are talking about grand juries. Grand juries are comprised of American citizens and the people that have entered pleas of guilty that will be flipping on your leader in a minute; they are Republicans—I do want to point that out—and half of them were Republicans that were hand-picked by Donald Trump himself!
“So, to be clear,” she continued, “whatever happens to your little leader, it’s going to be because of the actions that he took. So you can talk all you want to about how Jan. 6 was nonsense, but all of y’all were running at that time. Y’all were grabbing y’all’s gas masks and y’all were running to your offices because you didn’t know if they were coming to kill you.”Later, Crockett reflected on her day in the House and how she was forced to teach her Republication colleagues a lesson.
