Lizzo Had The Perfect Response To Jillian Michaels' Fatphobic Comments

Michaels questioned why fans were celebrating Lizzo's body, stating, "It isn’t gonna be awesome if she gets diabetes."

Celebrity personal trainer and TV personality Jillian Michaels has been fielding a storm of criticism from the internet after she recently made comments about the Grammy-nominated songstress Lizzo’s body and health.

  • On Wednesday (Jan. 8), Michaels took to Buzzfeed News’ morning show, AM2DM, where she questioned why fans were celebrating Lizzo’s figure. “Why are we celebrating her body? Why aren’t we celebrating her music?” she asked. “‘Cause it isn’t gonna be awesome if she gets diabetes.”

  • A clip of the interview went viral on the internet and has racked up over 3.4 million views since it was published. Michaels’ comments drew immediate backlash online as people came to Lizzo’s defense as many criticized that her comments were fatphobic and body-shaming.

Many also felt that she shouldn’t be commenting on Lizzo’s health unless she’s the singer’s personal doctor. Following the backlash, Michaels published a statement on Twitter were she doubled down on her comments and issued a statement advising her followers to “prioritize their health.”

“As I’ve stated repeatedly, we are all beautiful, worthy, and equally deserving,” Michaels wrote. “I also feel strongly that we love ourselves enough to acknowledge that there are serious health consequences that come with obesity – heart disease, diabetes, cancer to name only a few. I would never wish these for ANYONE and I would hope we prioritize our health because we LOVE ourselves and our bodies.”

  • On Thursday, Lizzo took to Instagram with a statement of her own. Although, she didn’t directly respond to the controversy, her message was loud and clear. In a video shared to her account, Lizzo showed a gorgeous, serene view from her balcony, walking her fans through a peaceful breathing exercise. She also issued an applause-worthy response, declaring that “today’s mantra is: This is my life. I have done nothing wrong. I forgive myself for thinking I was wrong in the first place. I deserve to be happy.”

  • Most recently, Lizzo opened to British Vogue about her journey towards self-love, saying, “my journey is all about self-care and finding that love for yourself and nurturing yourself. Because that’s what artists need more than anything.”
