Anthony Anderson Opens Up About Dating After Divorce
Anthony Anderson has a new woman in his life. And his mom, Doris Anderson, approves.
The Golden Globe nominee, speaking exclusively to The Messenger about his partnership with Charmin Ultra Soft Smooth Tear, revealed that Doris is now "friends" with his new girlfriend after he finalized his divorce from ex-wife Alvina Stewart in September.
The couple was married in Sept. 1999 and have two children, Kyra and Nathan. In 2015, Stewart filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. She listed their separation date as April 1, 2014, and requested spousal support. However, she dismissed the divorce petition in Jan. 2017.
Five years later, Stewart filed for divorce again, listing their separation date as “TBD.” She sought spousal support from Anderson and requested he cover her legal fees. Days later, Anderson filed for a dissolution of marriage, listing their separation date as Feb. 25. They had been married for 22 years when the divorce was settled.
Anderson shared in the interview that his mom has always been curious about “who got him.”
"You know, even when I was dating before I got married and now that I'm divorced, [she's] always been curious about who this person is, who it might be and all that," the actor said.
"But for the most part, she stays out of it. She gives me my space and she gave my wife and my partner her space at the time, but now she's nosy, 'Who this girl you dating now?' Don't worry about it, Mama. Don't worry about it...Now they're friends. My mom calls my lady up now."
He revealed that Doris once called up his girlfriend to ask "where she could get a new wig."
Over the years, we’ve witnessed Anderson’s tight-knit relationship with his mom, but never more than on ABC’s game show “To Tell the Truth.” According to ABC7, he said, "This is what my mother always wanted to do, and it never happened for her. So for me to be in the position of giving my mother the opportunity to be the star that she is and she always wanted to be is truly a blessing."
Mama Doris also joined her son on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” during his guest-hosting appearances. This year, the duo debuted their travel show “Anthony Anderson and Mom: European Vacation” on E!
"We had a great time, and I thought it was a great way to celebrate my mother and honor her in that way because of the sacrifices that she made for me," Anderson said.
