Draymond Green Says He Won't Attend a Raiders Game Since They're Leaving Oakland for Las Vegas
The Oakland Raiders announcing their relocation plan from the Bay Area to Las Vegas by 2020 or sooner was enough to rip the hearts out of die-hard Raider Nation fans and beyond.
Although Draymond Green grew up in Saginaw, Michigan, the Golden State Warriors' All-Star forward has been in Oakland long enough to feel the city's pain, as they're officially in lame-duck status and in the dubious position of watching their beloved team's impending relocation to Sin City.
Like many fans, Green didn't hesitate blasting the Raiders' ownership for having the nerve to rob the city of its squad. He added that he wouldn't attend a Raiders' game for the next three years, which is the tentatively slated window for the team to remain in Oakland before the move to Las Vegas.
"I feel bad for the city of Oakland, man," Green said to a pool of reporters yesterday, as reported by the San Jose Mercury News/Bay Area News Group. "I don’t even know how that’s going to work, honestly, with a football team moving to Las Vegas. I feel bad for the city. If I was a fan, I wouldn’t attend a game for the next three years, but that’s just me. That’s ridiculous. No way I would pay my way to attend a game."
Green went on to call the Raiders one of those untouchable NFL franchises that should remain in Oakland forever.
"That’s like moving the Dallas Cowboys or like moving the [Green Bay] Packers," he continued. "Like, moving the Raiders? You can move a lot of teams. Ain’t many fan bases like the Raiders’ fan base. It’s like moving the Boston Celtics from Boston or the Lakers from L.A. Like, you just don’t move certain franchises with the fan base that they have."
And out of all places, Green sounded shocked that Las Vegas could be a landing destination for an NFL team.
"It’s one thing if you’re moving from Oakland to Fremont or something, but to Las Vegas?" he questioned. "I wouldn’t attend a game. I won’t attend a game, and I’m not a die-hard Raiders fan, but I do support the city of Oakland. I feel like all fans should feel that way. You just don’t do that."
Watch him break it down in the clip below.
Damn. Go ahead and tell it like it is, Draymond.
There isn't anything more painful for a sports fan than rooting for a team for years only to have ownership rip them out from right under your nose.
Hold your heads, Oakland.
The Raiders' $1.9 billion dome stadium in Vegas is slated to be fully built in 2020, leaving the team in Oakland until then, unless ownership could work out a deal with UNLV and get them situated in Sin City sooner.
We can't help but wonder if Marshawn Lynch coming out of retirement and possibly signing with the Raiders this offseason would soften the blow of losing the team for his hometown of Oakland.
