Former Death Row Records Singer Jewell Dies
Jewell, an R&B singer-songwriter who created hits with Dr. Dre, N.W.A., Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Tha Dogg Pound, and more, has reportedly passed away.
According to former label-mate and collaborator Daz Dillinger, the former Death Row Records artist died Friday morning (May 6). No cause of death has been made public at the moment.
Jewell, born Jewell Caples, revealed she was hospitalized roughly two months ago with eight pounds of fluid on her heart, lungs, and legs. In an Instagram post from March 21, she said she had overcome her health issues for the time being.
“I was Hospitalized on March 2, 2022. Released on a March 5, 2022 went home, 8lbs of fluid on my heart, lungs, and legs! Went back to hospital March 16th until Today March 21,2022. I Almost Died!” she captioned the post. “Was supposed to be Airlifted to another facility. GOD reverse my symptoms extended me some GRACE! And gave me more time with my Family and Friends! Thank you JESUS for saving my life again! GOD IS REAL!”
It isn’t clear whether Jewell’s March hospitalization had to do with her death.
As Ambrosia For Heads points out, Jewell did an interview with The Art Of Dialogue last year and described her contributions to music. The Chicago native recalled singing on N.W.A.’s “I’d Rather F**k You,” and followed collaborating producer Dr. Dre from Eazy E’s Ruthless Records to a successful career at Death Row.
After completing solo work on the Deep Cover soundtrack, Jewell appeared on “Let Me Ride” and “B*****s Ain’t S**t” from Dre’s legendary album The Chronic. She then assisted Snoop Dogg with “What’s My Name” and “Gin And Juice” from his debut classic album Doggystyle.
During the mid-90s, Jewell appeared on The Dogg Pound’s “What Would You Do?” and Snoop’s “Murder Was The Case.”
“Mostly every song I ever did, I wrote my own lyrics [and] it was a hit,” she said during the late 2021 interview.
Jewell also insists she sang on Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s “Foe Tha Love Of $”. Shatasha Williams is the singer that the Cleveland quintet gave credit for the hook.
The BET family sends its condolences to Jewell’s family and friends during this difficult time.
