Dez Bryant Joins Jay Z's Roc Nation Sports
Dez Bryant's five-year, $11.8 rookie contract, which he signed with the Dallas Cowboys in 2010, is due to expire at the end of this season. That signals a huge payday for the star wide receiver during this off-season.
To help Bryant leverage a high-value extension with the Cowboys, he has called on Jay Z and Roc Nation Sports, officially joining the agency on Sunday. Bryant will count on the legendary MC, who also happens to be a die-hard Cowboys fan, and his Roc Nation Sports agency to land him an extension that pays him in the neighborhood of $13 million per season, ESPNDallas is reporting.
"I feel like it fits me," Bryant told ESPN about joining Roc Nation Sports after Dallas lost to the Arizona Cardinals 28-17 on Sunday. "It fits what I'm trying to do, what I'm trying to accomplish in life. I want to be the best that I can possibly be. It ain't about a contract. It's about me branding myself and being an icon for these kids. I love kids and they look up to me. I come from dirt — point blank, period — and every day I'm writing my story and it's getting better. I feel like they were the best choice for me. They can help me get to where I want to be. That's what it is."
Hov and Roc Nation Sports have posted a solid track record in landing their clients big contracts across a variety of sports, highlighted by second baseman Robinson Cano's mammoth 10-year, $240 million deal with the Seattle Mariners last December. As far as football goes, Roc Nation's client roster includes the likes of fellow wideout Victor Cruz from the New York Giants, Ndamukong Suh from the Detroit Lions and Geno Smith from the New York Jets to name a few.
Bryant hopes his representation with the Roc helps to avoid the possibility of Dallas placing its franchise tag on him. At 25-years-old and in his fifth season, Bryant has recorded 343 receptions for 4,739 yards and 46 touchdowns through his young career, easily recognized as one of the NFL's top-tier receivers. Bryant has 50 receptions for 635 yards and six touchdowns so far this season.
