Shaunie Henderson Reveals She Never Truly Loved Shaq in New Memoir, NBA Star Responds with Grace
Shaunie Henderson, wife, mother, entrepreneur, producer, and creator of the hit reality TV show "Basketball Wives," recently released her memoir, “Undefeated: Changing the Rules and Winning on My Own Terms.” In it, she opens up about finding love, offers advice for raising Black children, and inspires people to live on their own terms.
In her memoir, the 49-year-old mother of four and ex-wife of NBA star Shaquille O’Neal revealed, "Looking back, I don't know that I was ever really in love with the man."
Henderson explained in her memoir that she "was in love with the idea of being married to the man I had a family with," and "was in love with the idea of building a life together," during their marriage.
O’Neal took to his Instagram to respond. On an image, he wrote: "I understand...I wouldn’t have been in love with me either. Wishing you all the best. All love, Shaq." And he doubled down in the caption and said, “Trust me, I get it.”
O’Neal and Henderson’s son Shareef commented, “Love you, man! You saved my life.” The 24-year-old commented, “Literally the most lovable and likable person on the planet!"
When Henderson announced her memoir in January, she said in an interview that she was "nervous" about divulging details of her relationship with the basketball legend. She said, "I always had a fear of sharing too much and of telling my story that involved anybody else.”
She said, "I didn't want to disrespect someone else's story, even if it was a part of mine, but as I get older and do more things in the entertainment industry, I found that people have a misconception of who I am."
O’Neal took Henderson’s comments on the chin and received lots of support from celebrities and fans. Henderson hopes her memoir will help people get to know her…for real. In the book, she opens up about the struggles, heartbreaks, losses, and triumphs that have made her who she is today–sharing her pain to help others with their own struggles.
O’Neal and Henderson have a solid co-parenting relationship. They share four kids: sons Shareef and Shaqir and daughters Amirah and Me'arah. They also co-parent son Myles, from Henderson's previous relationship, and O'Neal has a daughter, Taahirah, with his former girlfriend Arnetta Yardbourgh.
Henderson has since married again, and her husband, Pastor Keion Henderson, has made Shaunie into a first lady of the church. She seems to have found a love that she can believe in.
