Yams Day Honors the Late Rap Visionary's Life with Music
A$AP Yams, co-founder of A$AP Mob, was honored on Yams Day Monday night at Terminal 5 in New York.
Numerous acts including Joey Badass, Action Bronson, Flatbush Zombies and Lil Uzi Vert performed alongside the Mob in remembrance of their fallen friend. Tatianna Paulino, Yams’ mother also spoke to those who attended and thanked everyone for coming out.
After she was done speaking, those on stage gathered around her, giving her hugs and re-assuring that her son would always be remembered. The New York Times described the show as one typical of New York. And that’s how Yams would’ve wanted to have it.
Born Steven Rodriguez, he was heavily influential in setting up the mob, but also making sure their appeal would reach the world. A former intern of legendary Harlem group Dipset, he was one of the few in the group who had any prior music industry-related experience as well.
A$AP Yams passed away at the top of 2015. His death marked a hole in the A$AP Mob, however he was recognized for his vision but also his lively personality. A$AP Ferg also recently held an event at Art Basel in Miami honoring Yams in coordination with an exhibit showcasing his crew.
