Premiere: Esperanza Spalding Seeks 'Unconditional Love' in New Video
Esperanza Spalding, the four-time Grammy Award-winning musician from Portland, Ore., has today (July 25) shared her new visual offerings for her latest track, “Unconditional Love,” airing exclusively on BET Soul.
The 31-year-old, known for being the first jazz artist to win the Grammy for “Best New Artist," released her latest album, Emily’s D+Evolution, earlier this March and was met with universal praise from critics and fans alike. The project introduces listeners to a different, whimsical side of the musician, which she later explained was intentional, as she continues to evolve as an artist with each record she releases.

During an interview, Spalding explained her inspiration for the 12-track album was to sing through the identity of her alter-ego Emily, which is also her middle name. By creating under a different version of herself, she was able to cover new creative ground with ease and in a way that is reflected beautifully throughout the project.
“[Emily] is a spirit, or a being, or an aspect who I met, or became aware of,” Spalding shares. “I recognize that my job… is to be her arms and ears and voice and body.”
Throughout “Unconditional Love,” Spalding utilizes her incredible vocal talents and artistry to declare passionately that she wants to redefine what unconditional love means, aiming to inspire a way to change “the story of love.”
