Walter Payton sets the NFL single-game rushing record with 275 yards on Nov. 20, 1977.

It was Nov. 20, 1977, a splendid day for slaying Vikings and setting records. On this day, Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton ran 275 yards into the history books, setting a single-game rushing record against the Minnesota Vikings.

Drafted to the NFL just two years earlier, Payton went on to enjoy a long and illustrious career that lasted over a decade. 

The Mississippi born player picked up a clutch of accolades along the way, including two NFL Most Valuable Player Awards.

In his early career, playing college football, Payton acquired the nickname “Sweetness,” befitting his mesmerizing athletic grace.
